Personal or Small Group Training? - Organically Grown Muscle

Personal or Small Group Training?

by | Oct 20, 2020 | Fitness

If you’re looking for the right motivation and environment to start your new health and fitness routine, you’re not alone! Both small group and personal training are effective strategies for getting yourself into a regular routine and building good fitness habits. So how do you choose what’s right for you? We have a few factors that might help you decide!

Are You Competitive?

Being naturally competitive isn’t a bad thing, and in fact makes for some really fun game nights with friends and family! Knowing your competitive nature will help you decide between group and one-on-one. If you enjoy healthy competition, a group setting can be a fantastic motivator. It’s surprisingly easy to talk oneself out of a difficult exercise and convince oneself that we’ve already done good enough. A group environment helps to overcome this by challenging ourselves to keep up. Of course, in the gym, your only real competition is yourself, and we discourage anyone from trying to outperform others one “one-upping” the group. However, a healthy competitive mindset can make group sessions a good fit!

What’s Your Experience Level?

Those that are brand new to workouts and fitness may prefer one-on-one personal training to group training, at least in the beginning. Group sessions can be intimidating for newbies, and you may prefer having someone to work with you, at your pace, and answer all your questions. Of course, a group workout can also be great for motivation and energy, so it depends on what you prefer!

Do You Need Special Accommodation?

One of the benefits of one-on-one personal training is that it can be scaled to your needs. If you’re coming in after an injury or other special physical concerns, it may be safer for you to begin with a personal trainer. Additionally, if you need to schedule your routine around a flexible lifestyle, a personal trainer can make that happen. On the flip side, if you enjoy just showing up as often as you can, a group session is a great way to get into working out!

Networking & Friendships

Depending on your personality, this can be either a pro or con! If you’re someone who loves connecting with likeminded people, networking and building friendships, small group training might be for you! For others of you, the thought of working out with other people might be intimidating or tiring, and there’s no shame in that! When deciding between group training and one-on-one personal training, you’ll need to decide where your comfort level is. Whichever you prefer, we’ve got you!
