One of the fears that many clients bring to me is in regards to their bone density and strength. We’ve all heard the terms “big boned” and “small boned” to describe people that seem to be naturally stronger or more frail. There’s a prevalent idea that your bone density is all genetic. And while certainly there’s always a genetic component, it is malleable. But what is the truth about bone density?
First, it’s important to remember that your bones are living. They are not rocks or dead weight. Your bones work and need nourishment like the rest of you. As such, they can be strengthened. A 2009 article documented the benefits of weight-bearing exercise on bone health and found this was exceptionally beneficial for those of older age. A newer 2018 article found that resistance training is specifically good for building bone density. As living tissue, your bones need nourishment, practice, and strength training like the rest of your body. This is why I place a strong emphasis on weight lifting for all ages in my Tacoma gym.
It is my passion to work with adults one-on-one to improve their lifelong fitness, potentially adding years to their lives! The Tacoma waterfront is a beautiful place to live, and we want to be around as long as we can to enjoy it. If you’re concerned about your bone density or health, you needn’t be. You can take action today.
